Initial research
- Contextual Inquiry in the video rental context
- Observations of people renting videos
- Surveys of people's renting habits
- Literature reviews of people's movie renting behavior and how they search through large sets of data
- Evaluations of current video information systems, both kiosks and the Internet Movie Database http://imdb.com
- Research provided valuable data that determined the starting point for the prototype
Iterative development
- Added new features and refined the prototype weekly
- Found usability problems with 5 user tests per week
- Total of 51 users in the ten weeks of iterations
Prototype fidelity
- First prototypes were low fidelity paper prototypes focusing on single features
- Tested general navigation structure using paper prototypes and PowerPoint
- Director prototypes tested more comprehensive navigation, animation and quicktime
- Final prototype with Java included a full database of movies, a large selection of trailers, a complete visual interface and a touch-screen
