Prototyping and User Testing Results:
- User testing was an essential tool for development
- Two to three rounds of user testing were required per feature
- Prototype fidelity influenced user's interaction styles
Paper
- Paper prototyping found most navigation problems
- Nomenclature problems discovered: industry terms were not understood.
One user remarked, "I don't even know what that word [genre] is";
- Initial button labels and titles were often misunderstood
Director:
- Most refinement of features was done with Director
- Determined user's interest in other features with out fully implementing them
- Fixed problems with button affordance, erroneous entries and layout
Hi Fidelity, Database Driven:
- Found specific Hi-Fi usability problems, e.g. similar movie titles or too many matches
- Discovered the importance of interaction context. Touch screen affordances are markedly different from mouse based ones
- Added new interaction techniques based on users' interaction attempts
Field Test:
- Final test was in a real video rental store
- Observed five people using the prototype
- Two users rented information based on the prototype information and suggestions. The other three users had already selected videos before trying the system
